The midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, are just over two weeks away. They are shaping up to be among the most momentous elections in U.S. history. Will there be a blue sweep to halt the destruction President Trump has unleashed on the republic, aided and abetted by unprincipled, corrupt, and servile Republicans in the Senate and Congress, and Trump's MAGA supporters? There is genuine concern among patriotic Americans that unless Democrats win a majority in both Houses, America will have crossed the point of no return as it hurtles toward fascism.
With that in
mind, I joined about 2,000 fellow Americans in downtown San Jose, California,
for the “No Kings Day” protest on Saturday, October 17, 2026. We gathered in
St. James Park, then chanted full-throated slogans condemning Trump's tyranny
before looping through downtown, accompanied by motorists honking in support.
“We Americans have to get uncomfortable if we expect change in the government,”
a protester told me as others around us chanted, “This is what democracy looks
like.” “Voting is sacred,” an elderly person shouted over the din of traffic.
“Trump was elected by an ecosystem of evil. We have to defeat this ecosystem
with our votes.”
When we
returned to the Park, speakers from all walks of life took the stage. “We will
win if we go out and vote,” said one. “Don’t be complacent. Don’t trust the
polls predicting a blue sweep. Take nothing for granted. VOTE,” said another. A
politician told us that in Silicon Valley, the epicenter of technology, tech
titans have turned vile and spineless, enabling Trump to spy on Americans with
impunity. They have been using AI to empower ICE to attack the most vulnerable
members of our communities. “Make no mistake,” he said to thunderous applause,
“they will all be held accountable, Trump and his cronies included. Trump has
set the world on fire with his war on Iran and his support for the Russian
dictator Putin at the expense of Ukraine. Our votes will force accountability.
People will go to prison.”
The San Jose
event was one of more than 2,500 protests held across America today. The
photographs I took in my city on “No Kings Day” show the unity in
diversity that makes America a light among nations, a light Trump and his
sycophants threaten to extinguish permanently. Attending the gathering in
downtown San Jose filled me with hope that Democrats can win a majority in both
the Senate and Congress on November 3 this year and send Trump to the ash heap
of history when the November 7, 2028, Presidential election rolls around. (Note the lone sign held by an Indian-American against Indian Prime Minister and dictator Modi.)
